Paraikankal

Like Jesus' Galilean ministry among the poor & dispossessed people, the Galilee that God has chosen for CHM is Paraikankal. Paraikankal is a God-forsaken area; it lies at the unwanted outskirts of Nagercoil, the headquarters of KanyakunariDistrict, the southernmosttip of India. Paraikankal is no place at all for a healthy hygienic and decent living with minimum standards of life. The whole area is peopled with beggars and alms-takers, pilferers and people who indulge in petty thefts, demon possessed people and local magicians who claim to possess demon driving powers, people who wallow in superstition, parents who never care for either the education of their children or their honest upbringing. The Ganges that flows across and around Paraikankal is the gutters, sewages and drainages. A sheet of tarpal or coconut leaves resting over four poles of pillars is their house. One cow dung smeared room is their grand palace. Health and hygiene are words unheard ofin Paraikankal. Parents initiate theirchildren into the gruesome acts of theft &begging, in short, people living the most indecent dehumanized life of cattles, nay, nay, far worse than animals. Salvation is humanization. Salvation is education. Salvation is social mobilization. Salvation is empowerment. Salvation is liberation. To secure a safe future for the denied and dispossessed people of Paraikankal is a great liberation task of man-making and woman-making that one finds in Jesus.

Free Tuition Centre

Both Socially and academically rehabilitated grownups of Paraikankal are given special coaching in the evening tuition centre. There are enough well trained teachers, the tutors who academically engage the school going and college going students by giving them regular, systematic, well planned and well structuredspecial tuition classes. There are about 120 student who undergo regular learning and tuition classes which help them promote their studies and reinforce and effectively supplement the ongoing programmes in the respective schools and colleges. The tuition centre gives much needed academic and educational filling, the process of growing up as well equipped students to face the future with courage and confidence. There are students ranging from LKG to liberal education in arts and science colleges and professional education in Engineering and Para-medical institutions. What is quite impressive about the entire academic venture is that three students from a very marginalized, perhaps the most backward region in Kanyakumari District have entered the portals of professional institutions (Engineering) and six students to Arts and Science college as first generation learners. The tuition classes are held regularly between 5.30 and 8.30 pm every day except Sundays and the students are given snacks and tea at the start and supper at the end of the classes by way of meting out their dire domestic economic needs. How true it is, God comes to the poor in the form of food and education.

Every Sunday regular worship service is conducted in the chapel by way of offering the spiritual food, moral instruction, ethical guidance and value based education to the budding children and youth of Paraikankal. The worship service is well complemented through a well-knit and equally well co-ordinated network of Sunday school, VBS, Fasting prayer, All night prayer etc.,

Vacation Bible School

Besides the regular worship service and Sunday classes, during every summer holidays Vacation Bible School is conducted for a period of seven days. It's a matter of great joy that more than 450 students from across the length and breadth of the local area participate in the Vacation Bible School.

Teachers drawn from local churches are the bulwark on which rest the glorious and unprecedented success of the Vacation Bible School. The seven day training is the ideal way of strengthening the children's faith, commitment and value based upbringing realizing their civic responsibilities and the need for maintaining friendly, tolerant, inter-personal relationship with all their neighbours of all faiths and all beliefs. The VBS also helps and students to mould their personality to hone their latent talents and sharpen their overflowing creativity. At the end of the VBS, the variety of religio-cultural programs prepared, managed and staged by the students all on their own with the help of the teachers is a standing witness. True, with much difficulty, yet with loving care the CHM provides all those who attend the VBS with snacks and drink and a nutritive lunch.

Christmas

Christmas, for Christ's Harvest Mission, is a celebration of the liberation and empowerment of the hapless poor and the most side lined sections of the community. Christmas throws up the challenge of loving others, living for others and sharing with others.

To CHM, Christmas is a celebration with a difference. The joy and happiness ofChristmas should dispel the darkness and desolation of the poor and the needy and those who live below the poverty line. On the occasion of every Christmas, CHM identifies the least of the least brothers and sisters, who are hungry and we feed them, who are naked and we cloth them, who are thirsty and we give them to drink, who are shacked with the sorrows and pressures of life and we liberate them. 100 families identified exclusively for this purpose would be given clothes, utensils for their homes and provisions for the Christmas meal. This would be gifted as a token of Christ's loving kindness at a special function to be held on 23rd Dec. every year in which all inmates, the tuition boys and girls, the beneficiaries, the teachers and the custodians of CHM would gather in a fellowship of sharing Christ's love in peace, joy and Good will with all people around us. This Christmas Eve get-together is also an occasion when all learners and students, whether it be a kid or a teenager or an adolescent or an adult would artistically share with a larger fellowship present Christ's love for the deprived human kind in creative art forms.
